Study Buddy

Study Buddy

College years were less stressful because of a ghost
I'm sure you've experienced the stress of studying--in any level, for any subject. The thought of failing a subject and repeating a year, or even dropping out, can drive anyone up the wall.

I was no different in college. I took up International Relations in one of the "premier" schools in the Philippines, so standards are pretty high. I was in my junior year, and so I had a bulk of IR major subjects to take. Researching and writing individual term papers, studying for exams (in essay form), and completing projects were finally taking a toll on me.

It didn't help, too, that just the year before my uncle died. He's my mom's eldest brother, and though I hardly saw him, he loved me as if I were his own kid. This encouraged me to live well, as I didn't have a father to call my own. So when he died, I had a hard time grieving. I started smoking and skipped classes to drink, to down out the pain. While I managed to scrape through sophomore year, I was beginning to feel the effects of my actions when I was reading through theories and applications of globalization in my third year.

It was one of those nights--I was cramming a midterm research paper about something on politics. Our study/family room was situated in a basement-like den, and no one dared bother me while I was attempting to study. Despite setting the air conditioner at maximum cool, I was feeling hot with stress. I was already cursing at the monitor for hanging and wondering why my mom didn't bother buying a new computer. Getting frustrated, I looked at my phone and texted my boyfriend at that time. He didn't reply, so I thought he might have already been sleeping.

I didn't know what time it was, but I could feel my back aching from sitting the whole evening. I barely made one hundred words on my paper, and it was already due the next day. But nothing was going into my head, more so into Microsoft Word. The question stated that it had no right or wrong answers, but I had to explain my case thoughtfully and based on resources. But even with a pile of photocopied readings with highlighted paragraphs and my own notes on the matter, yup... no... I just couldn't express what I thought about the subject. Getting no results, I decided to stand up and take a nap on the couch.

My nap was rather restful, but I had a weird dream about my uncle. He was sitting on the computer chair, swiveling it and facing me. He smiled, but didn't say anything. And then I must have went into a deep sleep.

I woke up with someone whispering "wake up" into my right ear. It sounded like my uncle, the same person who died a year ago; the same person who was in my dream, sitting on my computer chair and smiling at me. I could tell it was him: he had a deep tenor-like voice, gruff with years of smoking. I sniffed the air and smelled the familiar scent of freshly-smoked cigarettes that strong hung onto his clothes. It was how I remembered him, and he must have been waking me up.

So I roused myself, rubbed the sleep off my eyes, and went back to the computer. I looked at my phone and saw that it was already morning--almost sunrise even--and so I had to quickly write my term paper. I dedicated on whole page to my bibliography and four pages to explaining why such and such was a reasonable something. Screw it. I didn't care if it was badly done: better to have a mediocre grade than having no grade at all (I managed to get a C+ I think). As I printed my paper, I smelled those cigarettes again. I looked around me, listening for anything other than the printer's mechanical chugging. No one was awake yet.

It was then when I thought I saw a white mist on the couch, where my head would have been if I had continued sleeping. I rubbed my eyes again, thinking it was my lack of sleep messing around with my vision, but it was still there, only fainter. With the last page printed, I stapled my term paper and turned off the computer. I turned around again to see if the mist was still there. It wasn't. Might have been my brain, I thought. I proceeded to go about my day at school, thinking about the voice and the mist, my uncle, and how it all related to each other.

To this day I still think about it. Beyond the paper, the grade, and the subject, I couldn't help thinking that my uncle wanted to wake me up so I can finish my paper (and possibly encourage me to graduate on time). He came into my dream to encourage me, and lingered in real life to know that I had a study buddy, literally in spirit. He may be gone, but he still likes to make his presence felt... even if it meant waking someone up to finish an important task and get to school on time.

I notice you hear ghosts more than see them. Your other experiences are often you hearing a spirit talk or speak to you. Not sure if it makes sense but it's a pattern that I see. Cheers

Hey! That's a really good observation. Not sure how that started though but when my third eye 'opened,' I saw spirits, but not really hearing them. Thanks for seeing that :)

This isn't scary at all! It's very sweet in fact. Ghost stories don't have to be frightful, I guess.
